For their 18th article celebrating 'Dan Dare' on Fumettomania Factory - APS, Daniele Tomasi (another Dan'!) has shared a 2018 report by Stephen Whittle and Richard Moss about 'The World's Best Dan Dare Collection', housed previously at the Botanic Garden Museum in Churchtown, near Southport:
'At first [Marcus] Morris wanted Dan Dare to be a Christian antidote to what he saw as the pernicious effect of the shock-horror of the American comics that were coming over from the US at the time, so his lead character was going to be called 'Lex Christian'. This wasn’t really going to work so he and Frank Hampson came up with the idea of 'Chaplain Dan Dare' and the earlier incarnation of Dan Dare had a dog collar and a clerical looking cape. But when they started touting the idea around the publishing houses in London people found the religious message to be too strong so the character became 'Dan Dare', named after a hymn called ‘Dare to be a Daniel’, which was Frank Hampson’s mother’s favourite hymn.'

Eli Dan Dare oli profeetta Daniel! Pastori Morris ilmeisesti ehdotti, että hahmo olisi pappi, joka veisi evankeliumia vieraille planeetoille! Avaruuslaivaston seikkailija-eversti oli parempi idea.

Kun Dan Dare alkoi ilmestyä 1950, vuonna -45 perustettu YK oli vain muutaman vuoden ikäinen. UN on YK, ja se on sarjan utopiassa 90-lukuun mennessä kehittynyt maailmanhallitukseksi. Köyhyys ja sairaudet on voitettu. Maan kansojen kesken ei sotia enää käydä, sen sijaan uhka tulee ulkopuolelta. Monikulttuurisuus näkyy ruuduissakin, kun kokouksia pidetään.  Avaruuslaivastossa on siinäkin väkeä ympäri maailmaa, joten sekin lienee YK:n alainen.  Ministeriössä ja amiraliteetissa on kyllä aika vankka brittimiehitys...

Onpa myönteinen tulevaisuuden kuva, kuin Star Trekissä. Ja tosiaan: oikeassa elämässä Iso-Britannia oli toisen maailmansodan jälkeen menettänyt valta-asemansa uusille suurvalloille Yhdysvalloille ja Neuvostoliitolle, mutta sarjakuva näytti, että tulevaisuudessa britit ovat taas valtiaita!

Ilmestyi juuri hiljattain.

En ota kantaa myöhempien versioiden tarinoihin. Ne voivat minustakin olla parempia kuin alkuperäisen Dan Daren tarinat, mutta en tiedä, koska en ole tutustunut niihin. Vanhassa sarjassa on rasitteena tietty jäyhyys tai jopa piiloimperialismi kuten on sanottu. Puhuin vain taiteesta. Uskon, että alkuperäinen versio on ylittämätön taiteessa niin kuin Reimakin kirjoitti ketjussa aiemmin.

Asiasta toiseen, kun luin Purppurakuoleman kunnolla, koetin hahmottaa, millaisen hallintojärjestelmän tulevaisuuden Maassa se esittää. Se ei tullut selväksi. Tietääkö joku, ovatko valtiot yhdistyneet "Maan hallitukseksi" vai ovatko ne vain tiiviissä liitossa? Entä mikä on "Avaruuslaivaston", "Avaruushallinnon" ja "Avaruusministeriön" välinen hierarkia? Kaikki nämä termit näkyvät tekstissä. "Amiraliteetti" koskenee vain vesiä.

Entä tarkoittaako "U.N." joissakin laitteissa ja hahmojen kypärissä YK:ta vai jotakin muuta? Liitän tästä "U.N.:sta" tähän skannin. YK:n lippu taitaa näkyä albumin sivulla 34.

Itseä ainakin kiinnostaa tämä kronikka. 14 ilmestynyttä numeroa pakattuna ilmeisesti 7 osaan. Zagorikin jo ehtinyt numeroon 725, joten kyllä julkaistavaa riittäisi.
